Do I have to go to paralegal school

Paralegal training is really tough to go through for some people, so be cautious. Go for it only if law makes you happy and brings meaning to your life. Actually, if you enjoy the subject of law and are not scared of administrative work (remember, paralegals are also called legal assistants) – you may as well sign up for paralegal studies. It’s not just administrative assisting though – you may go into the military and do investigations, you may become a nursing paralegal, you may work in so many fields you just can’t even imagine right now! For a quick peek, just look at our jobs page on the top navigation – explore a few of these jobs and you will know what I’m talking about. Your teachers will transfer the ground base for your future career during all these classes and there’s no other way to learn than go to school.

Is paralegal studies a smart field to go to school for?

In all these years in the field I have never seen a stupid paralegal. Trust me, you’ll be reading so many books on law that after all this study your brain will be literally heavier than most people’s! The amount of information a paralegal digests for a single case is tremendous, and the cases will be coming in day in and day out. It will never become a boring work if you don’t allow it to – and that also depends on the career path you choose. When applying for a job always be careful as it might turn out to be a nightmare or a dream – depending on your daily tasks, your colleagues, your bosses, lawyers you will work with – make sure to assess carefully everything at the first interview. It’s not just you who is being asked questions – you are allowed to do it too (and it will even give you bonus points). These are some of the things they don’t teach you in paralegal schools – real-life questions and issues you will find answers for on this site!

Finding the right paralegal schools and moving to another state

If you look at the locations you will see some states with much larger number of paralegal schools than others – this is normal – I’ve listed all schools in the area, it’s just that some have less than others. If your stateĀ  does not offer enough choice you can always move and study in a different state – which will offer you new experiences, acquaintances and eventually a higher pay for your work as a paralegal. Just make sure your school is accredited (approved by the American Bar Association) – as there are many (not on this list) which are not accredited and their diploma will not do much for you.

There are more paralegal schools in bigger states – and respectively, these are also offering better programs

Moving to a larger state in order to study has other benefits too: you can easily find internships while you study and gain experience as you go – which is very important (if not of utmost importance) when going for your first job interviews.

I suggest you start with picking a city. Once the city is clear, choose a list of universities / colleges and get to read their reviews on forums and blogs online – try to find their campus forums, facebook groups – anything you can find and scrape – research skills are valuable for your education!

Pursuing the right degree for your goals

Going after a bachelor’s degree is way better than just settling for an associate’s or just a certificate. It’s not about the paper degree you get in the end, it’s all about the broad knowledge you receive when studying longer and generally more – you will be able to perform better on your job and eventually even working on your own, offering paralegal services on the side or as your full time business. Choosing among the paralegal schools is one of the first tasks to complete – after picking one you will be on your way to an exciting and challenging career.

You may even go prelaw and then pursue a paralegal degree – make sure that you ask the question when applying for a school.

How does “criminal justice” degree sound to you? What about… if you can do criminal investigations, or disaster management, or forensics? Does that sound boring? I hope not! These are all things you can do with a paralegal degree (and a few specializations, but these are easy). Only the best paralegal schools for you – that is our motto!
